Bridge Scour Protection at the Pilbara Rail Bridge using Bluemont Rock Bags™

Bluemont Rock Bags™ deployed in Pilbara rail road bridge

In Western Australia’s Pilbara region, a road rail bridge servicing nearby mine sites was vulnerable to scouring, particularly around its piles. The resource company responsible for maintaining the asset took a preventive approach and deployed Bluemont Rock Bags™ around the piles to guard against foundation erosion. Protecting this bridge was essential to ensure access to active mining operations in the area.

Project Overview

The Pilbara experiences an arid climate with episodic, high-intensity rainfall. River channels that carry little or no water for extended periods can transform rapidly during storm events. The velocity of water during these times can exert considerable force on the bridge piles. This exposes them to scouring, which can weaken the foundation. A prevention measure was paramount to protect the Pilbara road rail bridge.

The Challenge

Scour occurs when fast-moving water removes sediment from around the base of bridge piles, weakening the foundation over time. Left unaddressed, it can pose a serious threat to structural stability. Given the bridge’s role in supporting mine site operations, any degradation in structural integrity would carry both safety implications and significant operational disruption. Intervening before damage occurred was a priority for the asset owner.

The Solution

The resource company chose Bluemont Rock Bags™, also known as Kyowa Filter Units, as the suitable solution for protecting the bridge piles. With a flexible structure, they can conform effectively around pile geometries. They are also eco-friendly thanks to the construction from recycled materials. The simple deployment process was well suited to the logistics demands of a remote work site like the Pilbara.

Installation

Bluemont provided training on deployment via virtual sessions because of the health restrictions in place at the time of the project. But, both the client and the contractor managed this process professionally and led the installation efficiently.

Results

The Bluemont Rock Bags™ provided a durable and stable scour protection layer, giving the resource company confidence in the long-term performance of the structure and reducing the likelihood of costly emergency remediation works.

Related Applications

Bluemont Rock Bags™ are suited to a wide variety of erosion and scour protection applications across civil infrastructure. These include protection of bridge foundations and piers, stabilisation of riverbanks and waterway beds, erosion control along rail corridors, coastal and port revetment, and scour management at road level crossings.
