Coastal Erosion Control at Stockton Beach using Bluemont Rock Bags™

Stockton Beach in New South Wales, Australia

Stockton Beach in New South Wales, Australia, has faced ongoing shoreline erosion caused by repeated storm events and strong coastal conditions. To safeguard a vulnerable section of the beach while long-term restoration planning progressed, Newcastle City Council implemented an interim protection measure. Bluemont Rock Bags™ were deployed to control Stockton Beach erosion and provide temporary coastal defence.

Project Overview

The area along the coastline of Stockton Beach is often subjected to severe weather and strong waves. These factors have caused erosion on the beach over the years. After several trials and the implementation of different measures to control erosion on the beach, the local authorities found that the best solution for the beach erosion problem was the large-scale nourishment of the beach.

The Challenge

A section of the coastline between Meredith Street and Mitchell Street had become particularly vulnerable to erosion. It was close to the end of an already established seawall. The area was particularly vulnerable due to its exposure to strong wave action. Without intervention, further erosion could threaten nearby infrastructure and increase risks for the surrounding community.

The Solution

Kyowa Filter Units, also known as Bluemont Rock Bags™ were selected as a temporary erosion control measure following physical modelling. Their permeable structure enables wave energy to disperse while limiting the movement of sediments. Bluemont Rock Bags™ provided a flexible coastal protection system capable of operating effectively under demanding weather conditions.

Installation

To stabilise the affected area, 1,260 Bluemont Rock Bags™ were installed to create a large protective structure. The resulting formation created a wall approximately 7.2 metres high with a total weight exceeding 5,000 tonnes. The installation provides immediate shoreline protection while still allowing natural sand movement across the beach.

Results

The installation of Bluemont Rock Bags™ has helped reduce erosion pressure along this exposed section of coastline. Sand has gradually accumulated across parts of the structure, blending it into the natural beach profile while maintaining protection against severe weather events. The system provides temporary coastal defence while authorities prepare long-term beach nourishment works to tackle Stockton Beach erosion.

Related Applications

Bluemont Rock Bags™ are used in a range of hydraulic and coastal engineering applications, including shoreline protection, riverbank protection, bridge scour mitigation, and erosion control along waterways. Their open structure allows them to dissipate hydraulic forces while remaining stable in dynamic environments.
