Severe erosion in Bonnie Vale Beach in New South Wales posed a risk to its campground and its access roads. The authorities required an effective coastal erosion protection solution that also adapts well to the beach terrain. Bluemont Rock Bags™ were chosen for the project, given its success in many beach restoration efforts.
Project Snapshot
Location: Bonnie Vale Beach, NSW, Australia
Application: Coastal foreshore stabilisation and erosion protection
Project Overview
The NSW coastline experiences a range of coastal conditions that can accelerate erosion at varying rates. Bonnie Vale Beach is no exception. Storm events, high wave energy, and the effects of rising sea levels can strip sediment from otherwise stable-looking beaches. These coastal dynamics had caused the beach to erode back toward the campground and its access routes.
The Challenge
At Bonnie Vale Beach, the steady loss of sediment had advanced to the point where both the campground and its access roads faced a threat. Any further retreat of the beach would have compromised the safety and usability of the site. Taking action before damage became irreversible was essential for the authorities responsible for maintaining the beach.
The Solution
Bluemont Rock Bags™, also known as Kyowa Filter Units, were identified as the appropriate solution for stabilising the shoreline. Their flexible rope net construction allows them to adapt to uneven and variable beach surfaces. They also suit coastal environments where conditions shift throughout the year. Made from recycled materials, Bluemont Rock Bags™ were also ideal for use in an environmentally sensitive location.
Installation
The installation team filled the Bluemont Rock Bags™ on site and deployed to form a continuous barrier protecting the shore closest to the campground. The installation process was quick and efficient. The barrier was built to absorb incoming wave energy and reduce sediment loss from the beach, functioning effectively under both exposed and partially buried conditions.
Results
The Bluemont Rock Bags™ delivered a reliable and long-term erosion protection solution at Bonnie Vale Beach. The flexible barrier continues to perform across varying seasonal conditions, providing the site with consistent protection and ensuring visitors have access to the campground.
Related Applications
Bluemont Rock Bags™ are applicable across a broad range of erosion and scour protection scenarios within civil and coastal infrastructure. Common applications include stabilisation of beaches and shorelines, protection of riverbanks and stream beds, scour control around bridge piles and abutments, erosion management along transport corridors, and revetment construction at port and coastal facilities.
