Erosion Control in Hydraulic Structures in the Outback of Australia using Bluemont Rock Bags™

water management structure prone to erosion in the outback of Australia

Severe erosion threatened a flume structure in Australia’s remote outback. The soil around the perimeter had collapsed, putting the water management system at risk. Bluemont Rock Bags™ were installed to stabilise the foundation and restore its stability, providing proven erosion control in hydraulic structures.

Project Overview

Water control structures in Australia’s remote inland regions face demanding environmental conditions. Irregular water flows and the outback’s harsh climate put ongoing stress on weirs, flumes, and related infrastructure.

Erosion control in hydraulic structures was critical at this site.

The Challenge

A major soil collapse had occurred around the flume, undermining its foundation and perimeter. The erosion posed immediate risk of further damage as water continued to flow through the system. Standard erosion control methods weren’t suitable for the site’s specific constraints and environmental stresses.

The Solution

Bluemont Rock Bags™, also known as Kyowa Filter Units, were the choice to stabilise the damaged flume perimeter as they adapt well to uneven terrain. The units are made entirely from recycled materials, combining strength with environmental responsibility. They fit irregular surfaces easily, making them ideal for this eroded site.

Installation

The team filled Bluemont Rock Bags™ with locally sourced rock and placed them around the flume’s damaged perimeter. The installation created a protective barrier that slows down and spreads out water energy, reducing pressure on vulnerable soil. The flexible rock-filled units fitted the site’s existing contours.

Results

The rock bags successfully stopped the erosion and stabilised the flume structure. They now manage water energy effectively, protecting the soil from further scour. The project met its goals whilst maintaining cost efficiency and requiring minimal long-term maintenance effort.

Related Applications

Bluemont Rock Bags™ are used for multiple erosion control projects including coastal shoreline protection, river and stream bank reinforcement, scour protection at bridge foundations, and stabilising stormwater channels. The units’ strong yet flexible design suits both freshwater and marine applications across varied environmental conditions.
